Venice

This is a state which influenced dramatically all mediterranean trade. It was situated on the crossroads of the most vital trade routes. Venice emerged in the middle of 5 century. Then later, in 9 - 10 centuries it became the largest trading center between Europe and Asia. In the times of Crusades it was involved in supply and transportation for armies of crusaders, which gained it later very important trade privileges. In 1380 Venice managed to cope with its european challenger - Genuya. 15 century brought a number of trading cities under its wing - Paduya, Vicenza, Verona, Bresia, Bergamo, Ravenna, Faenza, Cremona, Friul. The conquest of Constantinople by Turkish army cast a serious blow on Venice. Venecian fleet led a furious fighting against barbarian pirates who strived to control Mediterranean sea. Due to development of relations with the "New world" and relocation of main trading routes Venice had lost its primary status but still it remained the richest mediterranean state.
